Duda Refuses To Name Initial PM Candidate Yet, Says New Parliament Will Meet On Nov 13

POLAND

Poland's President Andrzej Duda has just concluded his media briefing to provide an update on post-election matters, which comes after his consultations with all parties which will be represented in the next parliament. The head of state said that he saw no need to shorten the term of the current parliament and decided to convene the newly elected legislature for its first meeting on November 13.

  • The first meeting of the new parliament will start the clock for the President to nominate the Prime Minister - he will have two weeks to do so. Within the following two weeks, the Prime Minister will have to present a policy agenda to the legislature and seek a vote of confidence in their Cabinet. Rejecting the initial PM candidate would unlock the option for the parliamentary majority to propose its nominee.
  • Duda did not clarify who will be his initial PM candidate. The President said that "we have two serious contenders for the position of the Prime Minister," namely Law and Justice's Mateusz Morawiecki and Civic Coalition's Donald Tusk. He added that that the situation in which there are two serious PM candidates is unprecedented in Poland's democratic history and he needs to think about what to do next.
