Duda Veto Shows No Easy Ride For New Government

POLAND
  • Post-Christmas newsflow has shown that it won't be an easy ride for Tusk's new government, despite the election victory in October. President Duda vetoed the government's proposed spending bill late on Saturday Dec 23, as a direct response to the government's upending of the state broadcaster (Tusk started the process of ridding of the broadcaster of as many as 60 members of staff that were complicit in biased pre-election coverage).
  • Duda is now set to present his own spending bill to parliament, which sees Tusk's proposals revised to exclude subsidies to public media - a key part of Tusk's plan to overhaul state broadcasters. Cabinet is set to meet today from 11am local time to discuss budget issues.
  • No local economic releases due until Jan 2nd, which sees Manufacturing PMI for December.
