EC Spokesman Says "Important Step" Made In Poland's Push For Recovery Funds

PAP newswire ran comments from European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand who lauded progress in the work on court reforms in Polish parliament and said that it moves Poland closer to meeting the milestones for unlocking recovery funds.

  • "We will carefully follow further stages of the ongoing legislative process and then we will analyse legislation in its final shape. We remain in touch with the Polish authorities in order to ensure full compliance of Poland's legislation with the commitments it made with regard to the independence of its judiciary."
  • Prime Minister Morawiecki called on lawmakers to facilitate the adoption of the law. He called the bill a "difficult compromise," which is necessary to end the conflict over rule-of-law concerns and focus on the "real enemy, who is in the East, not in the West an all Poles know it."
  • The lower house of parliament greenlighted further work on the bill today, which was possible thanks to the abstentions of most opposition lawmakers, as junior coalition party Solidarna Polska voted to reject the law.
