MNI BRIEF: Canada Commits To Just One Of Three Fiscal Anchors
MNI (OTTAWA) - Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said Tuesday a fiscal update coming at the start of next week will stick to just one of three current fiscal anchors, by showing that the federal debt as a percentage of GDP will decline for the fiscal year that ended in March.
“A declining debt to GDP ratio is the guarantee, the numerical statement, of Canada’s fiscal sustainability,” Freeland said.
She declined to answer several questions at a press conference about another pledge to limit deficits to CAD40 billion. She had also earlier set another goal of bringing deficits to 1% of GDP or less. (See: MNI INTERVIEW: Trudeau Deficit Cap Strained By Election Threat)
