Economic Sentiment Improves

  • Czechia's economic sentiment index improved to -1.4 in July from -2.6 prior, mostly due to a recovery in consumer confidence index to -16.5 from -21.8. The CZSO said that the "number of respondents expecting a deterioration of the overall economic situation in the Czech Republic in the next twelve months decreased. The number of households rating their current financial situation worse compared to the previous twelve months also decreased, and for the second time in a row, the number of households who fear a worsening of their own financial situation in the next twelve months also slightly decreased."
  • Hospodarske Noviny ran a piece commenting on the latest trends in opinion polls, which show that former Prime Minister Andrej Babis' ANO is cementing its position as the most popular party, while Prime Minister Petr Fiala's coalition keeps bleeding support. The government's ratings have been hit by the unpopular fiscal consolidation package, while Hospodarske Noviny speculate that that "the bigger problem is that the government is acting confused."
