Ecuador Expected to Set Electoral Calendar Within Hours

  • Ecuador’s Constitutional Court will review whether President Guillermo Lasso’s decree to close the opposition-held congress was legal, according to the filing on the court’s website. Separately, Ecuador will set a calendar for presidential and congressional elections within hours, said Diana Atamaint, the national electoral council’s president, at a press conference.
  • CONAIE, Ecuador’s Indigenous federation, has made a statement following Lasso’s dissolvement of the national assembly. CONAIE have called on its supporters to form “permanent assemblies” to “monitor” the “dictatorship of Lasso” and stop “further dictatorial acts” – specifically economic reforms by decree. Local analysts point out that this means no big protests for now, but the situation remains on thin ice.
