EdF Makes Changes to SMR Design

EdF will switch to using existing technologies for the design of small modular nuclear reactors instead of developing its own innovations due to costs, the firm said, cited by Reuters.

  • EdF did not disclose whether this would affect the rollout of its SMRs.
  • A source told Reuters that the decision came after talks with prospective SMR clients such as Vattenfall, CEZ and Fortum.
  • Potential buyers will need security that promised costs won’t massively increase and that the delivery deadline will be met. Proven technologies could ensure that the LCOE for SMRs would be around €70-100/MWh, the source added.
  • "The reorientation consists of developing a design built exclusively from proven technological bricks. It will offer better conditions for success by facilitating technical feasibility," an EDF spokesperson told Reuters.
