EFF Presses Ahead With Nationwide Protest, Gov't Won't Speculate On Putin Visit

SOUTH AFRICA
  • South African authorities have tightened security measures as the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters party has called a protest action to demand ending load-shedding and President Ramaphosa's resignation. The EFF threatened that its "national shutdown" will bring the country to a standstill and called on all individuals and businesses to support the protest. The government decided to put the police and military on high alert as a precautionary measure, seeking to prevent a repeat of the 2021 protests which resulted in more than 350 deaths.

He refused to speculate on what would happen if Putin came to South Africa for a BRICS summit this year.
  • As a reminder, South Africa will observe a public holiday tomorrow. Following that, the focus will turn to February CPI data, due Wednesday.
