Efforts To Secure EU Recovery Funds Take Centre Stage Again

  • An aide to Prime Minister Morawiecki told Gazeta Wyborcza that the ruling Law and Justice party would likely lose the upcoming parliamentary election if Poland fails to secure access to EU recovery funds, as the opposition managed to convince the public opinion that the government is unable to negotiate with Brussels. The anonymous official told the newspaper that Law and Justice are now trying to persuade President Andrzej Duda to approve court legislation that would meet the requirements of the European Commission and "are not counting on [junior coalition party] Solidarna Polska." Parliament is expected to start discussing the court law as soon as this week.
  • The question of unblocking EU funds gains significance as Poland enters the election year. In the latest survey for DGP/RMF FM, 73% of respondents said that the issue would affect the outcome of the parliamentary election. A solid majority of 68% of those who support the ruling coalition shared this view.
  • Elsewhere, President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the chiefs of key security agencies met yesterday to discuss the situation in Ukraine. Official communique after the meeting did not provide many details.
