Election: National Coalition Leader Orpo To Form Government, Marin Concedes

FINLAND

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has lost the election. National Coalition leader Petteri Orpo is set to form government after his center-right part claimed 48 seats. The far-right Finns party won 46 seats, while Marin's Social Democrats came third, with 43 seats. 99% of the vote is counted (see this link ).

  • The FT reports: "Orpo said the results amounted to a “major victory” for the National Coalition and a “strong mandate for our politics”. He said he would start negotiations on forming a coalition. Orpo will need to assemble a bloc of at least 101 seats for a majority in the 200-seat parliament." "Marin's Green and leftwing coalition partners suffered heavy losses" (see the FT link here).
  • This left Marin conceding defeat even though her party got more seats than the previous election.
