EMISSIONS: More Countries Support Global Price for Shipping Emissions

EMISSIONS

More countries are in support of a global levy on shipping emissions, following an IMO working group meeting last week to discuss the matter according to Euractiv.

  • “At this week’s intersessional ship climate negotiations, we saw growing support for a ship GHG levy and fuel standard. These need to be urgently agreed,” Delaine McCullough, President of the Clean Shipping Coalition, said.
  • A total of 39 countries were supportive of a global GHG levy on shipping during last week’s negotiations according to GSCC numbers. This compares to 34 countries earlier this year.
  • Further meetings are expected this week which will include discussions on how to distribute the revenues from any levy.
  • The IMO is planning to agree on a GHG levy for the sector in April 2025, with the adoption of the levy expected at the end of next year.
