EMISSIONS: Volvo Urges EU to Keep 2035 Combustion Engine Vehicle Sales Halt

Volvo Car and 50 other firms are urging the European Union to stick to its plan to stop new combustion-engine vehicle sales from 2035 to create certainty for the sector according to Bloomberg.
- “Electrification is the single biggest action our industry can take to cut its carbon footprint. The 2035 target is crucial to align all stakeholders on this journey to ensure European competitiveness”, Jim Rowan, Volvo’s CEO, said.
- Rivian Automotive, Uber, IKEA and Iberdrola were amongst the companies pledging for current targets to stay in place.
- Volve recently abandoned targets to sell only fully electric vehicles by 2030 due to weaning demand.
- Italy last week filed an official proposal to bring forward the review of the EU’s planned combustion engine vehicle ban from 2035 by one year to 2025, Industry Minister Adolfo Urso said, cited by Reuters.
- Italy’s PM Meloni previously criticised the EU’s targets to end the sale of new combustion engine cars by 2035 because it would hurt the sector.
- Last year, the EU approved a law to ban new diesel and petrol car sales from 2035. The target is scheduled to be reviews in 2026.
