ENERGY: Trump Tariffs on Mexico, China, Canada Could Hit Oil Flows: Platts
ENERGY
President-elect Trump pledged to impose new tariffs on all imports from China, Mexico, and Canada when he takes office in January, potentially disrupting trade flows, Platts said.
- Trump would impose an additional 10% tariff on all imports from China – on top of current tariffs. He also threatened a new 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada.
- Mexico, Canada, and China are among the US’ top trade partners. USGC gasoline producers import large volumes of Mexican crudes.
- Platts’ sources said that the tariffs may push Mexican and Canadian crude suppliers towards a greater reliance on Asian buyers.
- Slowing flows of Isthmus, Maya, Cold Lake, and WCS grades to US refineries could make them more attractive in Asia.
- Japanese refiners are already interested in buying Canadian heavy sours to diversify supply.
- The US imports several commodities from China, including used cooking oil which is a key feedstock for SAF.
