Erdogan Doubles Down on Sweden, Finland Opposition

  • In an indication of the rising cost of living across Turkey, Sozcu cite regulatory authority figures in showing that 1.2mln consumers were cut off from natural gas supply because they couldn’t meet their bills in 2021 – a rise of 43% on the year.
  • Late yesterday, Erdogan repeated his opposition to the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO, stating that NATO is an organization to ensure security, not an organization to support terrorism. He concluded that he cannot let NATO expand under the current conditions.
  • On Turkish-Greek relations, Erdogan also spoke out against US bases in Greece, asking what the bases are positioned for, as he doesn’t believe they’re being used to support the Ukrainian war against Russia. In response, the Greek Foreign Minister said Turkey should refrain from strong and provocative statements, and seek calmness in bilateral relations.
  • Today, Erdogan meets with military units undergoing drills and testing at the Aegean province, with Erdogan still considering the next phase of a Turkish incursion into Syria.
