Erdogan - EU Discussions Omit HDP Closure Ahead of EU Summit

TURKEY

EU Readout on Erdogan - Von der Leyen meeting:

  • EU underlined the importance of sustained de-escalation and further strengthening confidence building to allow for a more positive EU-Turkey agenda
  • Exchanged views on the situation of Syrian refugees hosted in Turkey, situation inc Libya and Syria.
  • Also discussed a possible visit to Turkey following the March European Council.
  • No mention of closure lawsuit against Turkey's second largest opposition party HDP, or stripping of parliamentary status of an opposition member or new arrests wave of human rights activists
  • This should bode well for next week's EU summit where it is becoming increasingly evident that the EU will take a soft stance on Turkey and not implement new sanctions
