Erdoğan Fires More Top Officials of Turkey’s Statistics Institute

  • Erdoğan dismissed two deputy heads of the country’s statistics institute in an overnight presidential decree.
  • Erdoğan’s removal of Umut Serhat İdman and Nurettin Kaya late on Wednesday is the latest of several clear-outs of an institution tasked with calculating key economic data, including inflation, foreign trade, and GDP.
  • The president sacked and replaced the head of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) in late January. He brought in Erhan Çetinkaya, a former senior employee of the country’s banking watchdog. A total of five presidents have come and gone since September 2018
  • has also replaced three governors of the country’s central bank in less than three years and replaced its Monetary Policy Committee
