Eskom Sees Continued Loadshedding Over Next Couple Of Months

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The Daily Maverick reported that Eskom expects Stage 1/Stage 3 rolling blackouts almost every day in December and January, which was at odds with recent comments from Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. The minister vowed on Sunday that December would see a reduction in the severity of power cuts, with some day entirely free from blackouts.
  • TimesLive ran a report citing experts who claim that "ordinary citizens experience higher stages of load-shedding than Eskom announces because businesses and industry are prioritised". According to the report, municipalities add more hours to Eskom's loadshedding schedules in order to provide some reprieve for businesses, with Stage 6 ending up as Stage 8 for many consumers.
  • Minister Ramokgopa suggested that Eskom will have a new CEO by the end of the year after the utility's board gave Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gorhan three names to choose from. The position has remained vacant since Andre de Ruyter's resignation in February.
  • Eskom is currently looking to implement Stage 4 loadshedding continuously until 05:00 on Saturday.
