POWER: Estlink 2 Outage to Raise Estonian Power Prices by €0.014/kWh/yr

POWER

The unplanned outage of the 650MW Estlink 2 power link between Estonia-Finland is expected to raise electricity prices in Estonia by €0.014/kWh per year, totalling an estimated €39mn in costs, Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Climate Minister Yoko Alender said, cited by BNS.

  • Additionally, Prime Minister Kristen Michal noted that while the breakage will affect the energy balance between Estonia and Finland, the impact on prices will likely cause temporary fluctuations rather than a long-term increase.
  • Plans are being considered to enhance Estonia’s competitiveness, including exempting certain industries from renewable energy charges and exploring the possibility of creating additional reserve capacity, including a potential gas-powered plant in Narva.
  • The government is also discussing the introduction of the Kiisa emergency power plant to help lower prices during peak consumption periods, along with the long-term consideration of a nuclear power plant.
  • Climate Minister Yoko Alender highlighted efforts by transmission system operator Elering to explore protection measures for Estlink connections and the need for updating international maritime law.
  • The 650MW cable is still expected to return on 31 July 2025.
