EU Approves Proposed Changes to Hungary-Russia Nuclear Plant Contract

HUNGARY
  • The EU approved Hungary’s proposed modification to its contract with Russia’s Rosatom Corp. to expand its nuclear plant, which will allow the nation to speed up the long-delayed project, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said as per Bloomberg. The amendments will allow for a “significant acceleration” of the work at the Paks nuclear plant and for the two new blocks to come online by the early 2030s, Szijjjarto said.
  • The European Parliament is preparing to vote on a resolution concerning Hungary next week, MTI report citing a Facebook post by Justice Minister Judit Varga, who added that the document served to hinder Hungary in taking over the rotating presidency in 2024. The developments signal increasing strain in Hungary-EU relations.
  • The central bank will release a financial stability report at 0900BST/1000CET. Cabinet minister Gergely Gulyas will hold a regular press briefing of yesterday’s government meeting at 1400BST/1500CET.
