EU Commission May Issue Updated Assessment on Rule of Law Progress

  • The European Commission may issue an updated assessment on Hungary’s progress to meet rule of law demands in response to a request by some EU member states. Timing of such an assessment is unknown.
  • The State Secretary for Employment Policy said the government has "reached the limit" in terms of pairing payroll tax cuts with minimum wage rises at talks with representatives of employers and unions on Thursday, MTI report. Hungary's government has paired payroll tax reductions with minimum wage increases for years. At the start of 2022, the minimum wage rose by over 19% at the same time as employers' social security contribution was cut by 2.5% and the 1.5% vocational training contribution was scrapped.
