EU Energy Ministers Discuss Gas Price Cap

European energy ministers from 27 member states are meeting on Tuesday again in an attempt to reach an agreement on the proposed EU gas price cap.

  • Ministers remain divided on the Commission’s proposal to introduce a gas price cap at €275/MWh on the TTF front-month price.
  • Countries remained divided on the proposal in the lead-up to Tuesday's meeting, diplomats said. "At this moment in time, probably not one member state is happy with the proposal we are discussing," a senior EU diplomat said
  • “There is no consensus at this moment on how it needs to work and on the numbers”, Tinne van der Straeten, Belgium’s energy minister said.
  • Failure to reach a deal Tuesday would mean that EU leaders would have to discuss the issue when they convene at a summit on Thursday, before another gathering of energy ministers scheduled for next week.
