EU Gas Demand 17% Below 2019-21 Average in December: Bruegel

Natural gas demand in Europe remains tepid with EU natural gas demand 17% below the 2019-21 average in December according to Bruegel data. Low demand has helped maintain gas storage up above the five year average at 74.44% full on Jan 21 according to GIE data compared to the seasonal five year average of 63.3%.

  • Industrial demand dropped back during Nov and Dec to 84% of the average after seeing a recovery earlier in the year up to 88% in Oct.
  • Household demand was down slightly on the month to 82% of the 2019-21 average while power demand rebounded back up to 71% from 64% in November.
  • Total demand in December in Germany was down -14.5% in December from 2021 levels while France was down -20.7% below, Italy was -19.6% below and the Netherlands was down -23.9%.
