EU Prepares for Loss of Russian Gas Flows via Ukraine

NATURAL GAS

Russian gas flows entering the EU via Ukraine will likely stop by the end of this year, amid the expiry of the Russia-Ukraine pipeline deal, according to BNEF.

  • However, long-term contracts with Gazprom are adding complications with the potential for financial penalties if Ukraine fails to take delivery of the agreed volumes.
  • Naftogaz has a ship-or-pay deal, signed back in 2019 to take 40 Bcm per annum.
  • Ukraine took just 14.6 Bcm from Gazprom in 2023, declaring an FM at its Sokhranivka transit point.
  • European countries reliant on flows from this route are diversifying their supply, but Russian gas is still a large component of their imports. The most affected are Austria, Slovakia, Italy, and Moldova.
  • Austria is reliant on Russia for over 90% of its supply in some months. 98% of its December gas supply came from Russia.
