EU Should Sanction Russian LNG: Think Tank

The European Union may need to rely on sanctions to tackle rising imports of Russian LNG to meet its ban on all fossil-fuel shipments from Moscow by 2027 according to Bruegel.

  • The EU could use its new mechanism for coordinating joint gas purchases to curb imports or introduce soft sanctions that discourage new purchases but do not break existing supply agreements in order to limit Russian LNG imports, the think tank said.
  • Bruegel said the EU could adapt its Energy Platform to handle limited Russian LNG supplies by sanctioning imports, forcing the termination of long-term contracts and allow the EU to offer to buy the LNG at a lower-than-market price via the platform.
  • Kadri Simson previously called on companies to not renew expiring LNG contracts with Russian suppliers.
