EU to Propose Demand Cut and Energy Company Profit Tax

ELECTRICITY

The EC will propose a mandatory target to cut power use and a levy from fossil fuel company profits to make a financial contribution to struggling consumers.

  • It will suggest two targets on power demand reduction; an objective to cut overall consumption and a mandatory goal on lowering demand during selected peak hours.
  • The “exceptional and temporary” contribution on oil, gas, coal, and refining companies would be based on taxable surplus profits made in the fiscal year 2022.
  • The proposal would include a cap on the price of non gas generated power to limit excessive revenue.
  • The details are expected to be release this week before they can be signed off by member states.
