EMISSIONS: Europe to Unveil Clean Industrial Deal on 26 February

EMISSIONS

The European Commission is set to unveil its Clean Industrial Deal on 26 Feb, focusing on four pillars, while France is lobbying for the inclusion of nuclear energy as party of the deal.

  • The EC outlined four pillars of focus as part of the Clean Industrial Deal: predictable and simplified regulatory environment, faster access to sufficient funding, skills and open trade for resilient supply chains.
  • The bloc intends to extend the financial aid provisions to all renewable technologies under RED II, to renewable hydrogen and biofuel storage.
  • The EU also plans to allow aid for decarbonising industrial processes by reference to standard percentages of investment costs for hydrogen use, energy efficiency and electrification.
  • The bloc will also present a Net-Zero Industry Act that will simplify regulatory framework for products that are key to meet climate neutrality goals, including batteries, windmills, heat pumps, solar, electrolysers, carbon capture and storage technologies.
  • The Critical Raw Materials Act aims to diversify sourcing of raw materials used in the manufacturing of EU net-zero technologies.
  • The European Environmental Bureau said the deal should aim for 100% renewable energy supply on domestic uses and industrial processes, while also focusing on reducing energy demand.
  • EU industry chief Stéphane Séjourné is advocating for the bloc to incorporate nuclear energy into the Clean Industrial Deal according to Politico.
  • "There's a part of Europe that I believe is the majority today, which considers that nuclear power should be part of our decarbonization strategy," Séjourné told Politico.
  • Germany is demanding the EU to focus on subsidies for adopting green technologies, removing bureaucratic hurdles, greater flexibility for member states to support their industries during the green transition and to support demand for green products, it said in a document.
