European Gas Demand Down 19% in May vs 2017-21 Average

European natural gas demand was down 19% in May compared to the 2017-21 average according to early ICIS data.

  • Industrial demand in Germany in May was down 29% compared to the 3yr 2019-21 average with commercial/residential down 34% but power fairly flat.
  • In GB the month saw an 8% cut in gas-to-power, with commercial/residential down 27% while the small industry share was down 63%.
  • European savings, not adjusted for temperature, were 10% below average in April with EU only -18%, Germany -21%, GB -24%, Italy -11%, Netherlands -29%, France -23% and Spain -5%.
