European Lawmakers Flag Issues With Hungary Funding, Despite "Positive Developments"

HUNGARY
  • MEP Monika Hohlmeier begins press conference by saying their core concern is how EU funds will reach Hungary citizens and businesses fairly and transparently: “We notice several positive developments”
  • “We will continue to closely to monitor the implementation of judicial reforms”, “There are persisting problems in the implementation of the EU funds”
  • Hohlmeier listed a number of examples of governance and auditing issues in Hungary, and ended her part of the speech by calling for Hungary to achieve the 27 super-milestones needed to unlock the funds: “Our goal is that the money is spent in Hungary”
  • Lara Wolters of the S&D group followed, stating that “the picture that has emerged to us [after talks with Hungarian officials] is of one that is of great concern to us”.
  • The comments stem from the European Parliament Budgetary Control Committee briefing, having concluded a visit to Budapest.
