Ex-Malaysian PM Razak Receives Lengthy Sentence For Part in 1MDB Fraud

Ex-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been given multiple prison
sentences for his part in the massive 1MDB sovereign wealth scandal that
engulfed the country several years ago.

  • Razak was found guilty earlier today on charges of abuse of office, money
laundering, and criminal breach of trust.
  • The sentences run as follows: 1 count of abuse of power, 12 years +
MYR210m (USD49.3mn) fine, 3 counts of criminal breach of trust, 10 years
each, 3 counts of money laundering 10 years each. All to run
concurrently. Extra 5 years if fine not paid.
  • The case was viewed as a key test of Malaysia's rule of law and judiciary
after Razak's UMNO returned to power in March.
  • Razak expected to appeal against all convictions.
