External Affairs Min - 'Russia Is A Steady & Time-Tester Partner'

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow. Maha Siddiqui at NDTV summarises: "Takeaways from EAM S Jaishankar’s visit to Moscow- India’s ties w/ Russia remain strong despite pressure - Jaishankar not only reiterates “steady”, “time-tested” partner phrase but also adds the relationship had “worked to our advantage” in managing energy woes.

  • Siddiqui: "The fact that despite pressure India will maintain and expand ties with Russia. EAM Jaishankar said - the fact that he was in Moscow with a delegation speaks of the relationship. Also added, “any objective evaluation would confirm it serves both the countries very, very well.”
  • Jaishankar: ""Ukraine conflict was dominate feature of talks...we are seeing growing concerns on energy and food security due to Ukraine war... the global south feels the pain".
India seen, alongside Turkey, as one of the global powers most able to work as a mediator between Kyiv and Moscow given their efforts to remain neutral on the conflict. Indian gov't continues to come under pressure from the West to disassociate w/Moscow. However, cheap energy supplies and military equipment from Russia likely to reduce prospect of Modi gov't overtly backing Ukraine.
