Extra 200mn Doses Of Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine Added To EU Order

EU COMMISSION

BioNTech this morning has released a press statement confirming that the European Commission has added an additional 200mn doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to its existing order, with the option of requesting an additional 100mn doses.

  • The order raises the EU's total order of Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines to 500mn to be supplied in 2021, with the firm stating that 75mn are set to be delivered by the end of Q221.
  • The firm also confirms plans to expand production capacity at its plant in Marburg, Germany. This will, according to CEO Dr. Ugur Sahin, allow the firm to produce 2bn doses of its COVID-19 vaccine in 2021.
  • Announcement likely to come as a relief to Commission leadership. President Ursula von der Leyen and her College of Commissioners have faced criticism from all sides over perceptions that it has botched the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, and caused major reputational damage to the bloc by seeking to invoke Art.16 of the Northern Ireland protocol to stop the export of vaccines to the UK.
