Falling LNG Prices Increase Interest from Asian LNG Buyers

LNG

The lowest LNG cargo prices in more than a year are attracting the interest of energy companies in Asian emerging markets.

  • Thailand, India and Bangladesh have all increased interest to purchase cargoes at current lower market prices. Spot LNG prices are now competitive with the price of coal for power generation according to Rystad Energy.
  • Asian spot LNG prices were below 20$/mmbtu for the first time since September 2021 at 19.50$/mmbtu last week. Inventories remain higher than normal towards the end of the peak winter heating season.
  • Bangladesh's Petrobangla is planning to buy 10 to 12 cargoes of LNG from the spot market until June and Thailand's PTT is seeking 12 LNG cargoes to be delivered between February and April.
  • US LNG netbacks for March still encourage supply to Asia although the difference has reduced as TTF has found support in recent days. The US netback to Europe is 14.61$/mmbtu and to Asia is 14.85$/mmbtu.
