Fallout From Gov't's Rift With Security Services Draws Attention

  • National Electoral Commission head Sylwester Marciniak said that he would like the results of parliamentary elections and a national referendum to be known on Tuesday afternoon at the latest, but would be happy if votes could be counted by the morning or even during the night from Monday into Tuesday. Vote counting may take longer than before because of the referendum held alongside the elections.
  • A TVN24 reporter revealed that the two top commanders who tendered their resignations earlier this week quit their positions after being permanently sidelined from military decision-making and communications. Operational commander Tomasz Piotrowski reportedly learned about the Defence Minister's accusations surrounding his handling of the Russian missile incident earlier this year from TV.
  • DGP ran a source report suggesting the outgoing commanders did not notify the Presidential Palace about their imminent resignations in advance, even as the President took their side in their conflict with the Defence Minister. The newspaper suggests that the rotations should not have any major consequences for the army but indicate that the nominations for new commanders were driven primarily by the need to find a quick solution to the situation at the end of the election campaign.
  • Ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski tried to order police officers to check the ID of a protester trying to disrupt his visit to a monument commemorating the 2010 Smolensk air disaster but they refused to comply. Police union leader Rafal Jankowski noted that no politician can issue orders to the police, who are only obliged to follow the orders of their superiors.
