Feijóo Loses Vote; Two Months To Avoid Snap Election As Countdown Starts

SPAIN

As expected, centre-right People's Party leader Alberto Nunez Feijóo lost his first investiture vote in the Congress of Deputies as he seeks the Spanish prime minister's office. In line with our projections in an earlier bullet, Feijóo won the support of 172 deputies compared to 178 voting against, falling short of the absolute majority required. A second ballot takes place on Friday 29 September with a simple majority required. However, the same vote tally is expected.

  • Today's vote sets the clock ticking on a two-month countdown. If no candidate wins an investiture vote by 27 November then parliament is dissolved and snap elections must take place by 14 January 2024.
