Finance Minister Marcel Says To Be Cautiously Optimistic

CHILE
  • Chile’s Finance Minister, Mario Marcel, has said he is more optimistic about what lies ahead, speaking after the strong activity figures on Wednesday.
  • “Very negative scenarios, which were anticipated in terms of inflation, unemployment, activity, fortunately have not materialized. The Chilean economy has turned out to be more resilient and with a greater capacity for adjustment than expected," Marcel said.
  • But he warned that this process is not over yet. “The numbers of a month, one always has to look at them with some caution. In this quarter we may have slightly more negative data in February due to the effect of forest fires, for example," he added.
  • Marcel pointed out that, however, the savings account that they are generating with figures that "have systematically been above expectations" will help to complete the adjustment process in the coming months and start a sustained recovery into the future. (Bloomberg)
