Finance Minister Says External Factors Driving Domestic Inflation

CHILE
  • Factors including the exchange rate, as well as global food and fuel costs are having a stronger role in driving Chile’s inflation, Finance Minister Mario Marcel says in an online event on Monday.
    • Marcel added that tax reform is in the ‘final stretch’ before it will be presented. Reform is to focus on income tax, mining royalty, green taxes and reducing tax evasion with the overall aim to reduce uncertainty.
    • According to Marcel, the government are to take care to assure that mining royalty doesn’t dissuade investments.
  • Late yesterday, Bloomberg reported that the Chilean peso was trimming losses after traders said the Finance Ministry sold $15 million in the spot market to local dealers.
    • The Hacienda website has no information on a dollar auction and according to the report a spokesperson didn’t immediately comment on said reports.
