POLAND: FinMin Deliberates Action On Subsidy For Main Opposition Party

POLAND
  • Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski is yet to decide whether to transfer the main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party's share of state subsidy to the tune of PLN39mn after the National Electoral Commission (PKW) instructed him to do so around the turn of the year. The PKW changed its original decision based on the verdict of one of the organs of the Supreme Court, whose legitimacy has been contested by the ruling coalition in the wake of reforms enacted by the previous administration. Money.pl reported that Domanski will announce his decision in the coming days. The outlet claims that as things stand, it is likely that Domanski will likely challenge the PKW's decision and refuse to transfer the funds for now.
  • Sejm Speaker Szymon Holownia is expected to announce the date for the presidential election today. He ruled out holding the election during the holidays at the beginning of May, leaving May 11 and May 18 on the table. The crowded field of candidates is dominated by Civic Coalition's Rafal Trzaskowski and Law and Justice's Karol Nawrocki, who are expected to advance to the run-off. Betting markets favour Trzaskowski, in line with the trends in early opinion polls.
