Finnish Def Min-Important That Sweden & Finland Join NATO Together

Finnish Defence Minister Mikko Savola has stated that it is 'important that Sweden and Finland join NATO together' as speculation continues that Finland could seek to join the defensive alliance solo as Turkey continues to hold up Sweden's accession process.

  • Last week Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that his gov't could be inclined to approve Finland's accession without Sweden as diplomatic relations between Ankara and Stockholm remain poor. Turkey maintains that Sweden must cooperate more effectively on the extradition of Kurdish dissidents that it labels terrorists, while anti-Islamic protests in Stockholm have further soured the situation.
  • So far Helsinki has maintained that the two Nordic nations will join NATO at the same time, but it remains to be seen how long this cooperation will last as concerns about Russia's future military aims remain present.
