First Increase in Drilled but Uncompleted Wells Since June 2020

The number of drilled but uncompleted oil and gas wells (DUCs) increased for the first time in 28 months in October by 8 to 4,408 according to EIA data released yesterday.

  • The rise in DUCs is the first sign of a build up in wells that have been drilled but not yet undergone hydraulic fracturing since June 2020.
  • Producers have recently been limiting output increases with focus on investor returns and production restricted by supply shortages and increasing costs.
