Fiscal Statement Still Coming 31 Oct-BBC

UK

Simon Jack at the BBC: "Treasury sources confirm that Hunt is not standing for PM and (new) October 31st is still the date that the much anticipated new budget/fiscal statement will happen."

  • Victoria Fritz at the BBC: "...the statement that Jeremy Hunt will not stand is important. So long as he's steadying the fiscal ship, in some ways the PM panto is a sideshow in terms of investor & international confidence in the short term."
  • Given the short turnaround in the leadership contest that appears to be planned (see 1347BST bullet), it would seem that there is some form of plan in place for ensuring a smooth transition of power. Keeping the 31 Oct date for the fiscal statement would also imply that whoever takes over would plan to keep Jeremy Hunt as chancellor.
