Florida Primary Elections Today - Democrats Aim At Unseating Gov DeSantis

US

In the Florida midterm primary elections today Democrats will decide on a candidate to challenge Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in November.

  • DeSantis is widely expected to mount a strong bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
  • Democrat voters will choose between former Republican Governor of Florida and current Democrat House Rep Charlie Crist (R-FL), who switched allegiance to the Democrats in 2012 and state Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried.
  • Politico: “Fried billed her campaign as “Something New” and in the closing weeks zeroed in on Crist’s Republican past and his convoluted takes on abortion over the course of his lengthy political career."
  • New York Times: “The race has highlighted simmering fissures within the Florida Democratic Party and on the political left more broadly that could carry over into the general election campaign. Whereas the Fried camp says a candidate with solid liberal credentials is the best way to energize the base, Crist’s supporters contend the only way to win against DeSantis is to find someone who will draw voters from the center of the aisle.”
  • Fernand Amandi, a Democratic pollster, said that until recently DeSantis looked “unbeatable,” but, “now looks vulnerable.”
  • Amandi: “That doesn’t mean he’s going to be defeated, but it means the dynamics have changed enough at the national level that what once looked like a sure thing is now a potentially competitive race.”
