Florida Redistricting Dispute Intensifies

US

Florida is currently redrawing its congressional map ahead of November's midterms and in an unprecedented move for a Governor, Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has submitted his own congressional map to the state’s redistricting committee.

  • The DeSantis map has been criticised as both a power play, and evidence of partisan and racial gerrymandering. The map proposed by DeSantis would have given former president Donald Trump an additional two seats in 2020 and it cuts out two of the four African American districts.
  • The move may foreshadow a DeSantis veto on the current map under consideration that is expected to favour the Democrats. It also raises the profile of DeSantis who is currently being touted as a potential GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
  • Florida's redistricting process is one to watch ahead of the 2022 House elections. The makeup of the House will be influenced by how effectively Democrat and Republican controlled states can reshape their congressional maps to deliver seats in November.
