FM Çavuşoğlu: "We will defend our rights without compromising in the Eastern Mediterranean".

TURKEY

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, speaking at a joint press conference with Azerbaijani FM Bayramov says that Turkey will continue to 'defend' its rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.

  • Comes as tensions between Turkey and Greece heat up once again in the Eastern Med.
  • Turkey sent a research ship, the Oruc Reis, to waters south of the Greek island of Kastellorizo several days ago on the premise of carrying out seismic surveys to establish the location of potential hydrocarbon deposits.
  • The ship was accompanied by two Turkish escort vessels, which may impact the Oruc Reis' ability to carry out the sensitive seismic surveys.
  • The move comes days after Greece and Egypt signed documents confirming their 'exclusive economic zones' of control for hydrocarbon exploration in the region.
  • Eastern Med remains a simmering hotspot in Europe, Middle East and North Africa, with Greece-Turkey and Turkey-EU relations particularly poor at present.
