FM: 'Tehran Is Ready For Reaching Good Deal [In Vienna]'

Abas Aslani at the Center for Middle East Strategic Studies tweets: "Iran & UAE FMs had a phone conversation over bilateral & regional issues. Iran FM said Tehran is "ready for reaching a good deal [in Vienna] & that Iran believes the other parties need to return to their commitments". He also said UAE FM's trip to Damascus was a "positive step"

  • This is the most positive comment from an Iranian minister to date regarding the prospect of talks resuming.
  • There has been no progress in talks between Iran and the other Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA, the Iran nuclear deal) signatories since President Ebrahim Raisi came to office in August.
  • The hardline administration has so far dragged its heels on resuming talks with Russia, China, France, Germany and the UK. The talks are aimed at bringing Iran back into compliance with the deal and facilitating a path for the US to rejoin the agreement (or a similar reworked deal).
