Fmr AG Barr-Trump Conduct 'Betrays' Office, Orchestrating Mob 'Inexcusable'

US

Former Attorney General William Barr has said that the conduct of President Trump is a 'betrayal' of the office of the president, and that the president's 'orchestration' of the mob that ransacked the Capitol building is 'inexcusable'.

  • Barr served as Trump's AG from February 2019 (following the resignation of Jeff Sessions at Trump's request) to December 2020.
  • He is the latest in a growing line of former Trump officials and Republican politicians to come out against President Trump in the wake of the attack on Congress.
  • Speculation has risen that senior congressional and administration figures could seek to remove Trump from office early under the auspices of the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which allows for the removal of a sitting president if they are deemed to be incapacitated and unable to fulfil the duties of the office.
  • This remains an unlikely prospect at present, with just 13 days to go until the official handover of power (which Trump has now confirmed will take place, peacefully).
  • With the recent announcement that Facebook will block Trump's accounts for the remainder of his term, and the potential for Twitter and other social media outlets to do the same, the president is set to find it more difficult to spread his opinions. With his main forum of disinformation distribution blocked, senior officials may see the invocation of the 25th amendment as unnecessary.
