UK: Following Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's confirmation that he will support a
December general election, focus now likely to shift to various amendments that
could alter the gov'ts 15-line bill due to be debated and voted on today.
- Bill sets date of election as Thursday 12 December. Labour have said they will
support an election on any day, with the SNP and Lib Dems believed to favour an
earlier Dec 9 vote.
- Amendments to the bill are expected, with one potentially attempting to widen
franchise to allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote, while other may seek to put EU
citizens with settled status on the electoral roll. Should either of these look
like they may pass, the gov't could well pull the bill.
- In an odd situation, Lib Dems or SNP could oppose these amendments, despite
their previous support for both policies, in order to get a Dec election.
