TURKEY
TURKEY: Following the announcement last night that the EU could impose sanctions
on Turkey for unauthorised gas drilling off the coast of Cyprus, the Turkish
gov't has responded aggressively.
- On Tuesday President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to release around 3mn
Syrian and Iraqi refugees from camps, and allowing them to travel to Europe.
- Erdogan also threatened to release IS prisoners, stating "You [the EU] should
revise your stance toward Turkey, which holds so many IS members in prison and
controls them in Syria." If Erdogan follows through on this threat is could
present significant security challenges in the EU.
- Relations between the EU and Turkey have been tepid for a number of years,
with Erdogan's shift towards a more authoritarian leadership style bringing
criticism, but not outright hostility. EU member states have proved willing to
accept Erdogan's leadership style in exchange for Middle Eastern refugees being
held in Turkey and not being allowed to travel to Europe.
