Retail park footfall saw largest improvement

  • The survey covers the period Jul 5 to Aug 1 and states that footfall fell at a slower pace than in the previous month.
  • July was the first full month in which shops and the hospitality sector were allowed to open and as a result, footfall improved markedly in all areas.
  • An annual footfall drop of 47.5% was recorded for high streets, with the survey noting that the reopening of pubs and restaurants did not have a significant impact.
  • Retail parks saw the the lowest y/y decline in footfall, falling by only 22.4%, mainly due to wider spaces making social distancing easier.
  • Shopping centres have been hit hardest due to enclosed spaces with footfall decreasing 48.1% compared to the previous year.
  • While Northern Ireland saw the smallest decline in footfall, Wales and Scotland recorded the highest rates.
