UK DATA: Footfall Rises As Shops Reopen
---------------------------------------------------------------
- Jun BRC-Shoppertrak Footfall -62.6% Y/Y (May -81.6% Y/Y)
- Retail park footfall saw largest improvement
----------------------------------------------------------------
The survey covers the period May 31 to July 4 and the report notes that footfall
declined at a faster pace in the first 2 weeks compared to the last 3 weeks
where shops were allowed to reopen. Footfall dropped 77.1% y/y at the beginning
of the survey period and only fell by 53.3% after stores were allowed to open
again in England (Jun 15) and Northern Ireland (Jun 12). Retail parks saw the
largest improvement with footfall decreasing by 33.8% y/y, mainly due to wider
open spaces and a higher proportion of supermarkets. Footfall on high streets
dropped 64.5%, while shopping centre footfall slumped 68.3%, showing the largest
decline. The report notes that the UK's recovery in footfall has been muted
compared to its European peers, however the reopening of the hospitality sector
is likely to provide another boost to footfall in the next month.
