Foreign Min-US Shouldn't Try To Deal w/China From Position Of Strength

Comments emerging from Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs following meeting between China's Foreign Minister and senior diplomat Wang Yi and US Ambassador to China R. Nicholas Burns.

  • Wang:The US should stop trying to deal with China from its position of strength, and stop thinking about suppressing and containing China's development. Says he hopes the US ambassador will serve as a 'bridge and link' between China and the US
  • Wang: China-US relations are at a critical juncture. The international community generally expects the stable development of China-US relations.
  • Wang: China and the US should respect each other, coexist peacefully, and cooperate for win-win results. China and the US, as two major powers, cannot change each other.
  • Burns: The US pays close attention to 20th National Congress of CPC. US-China relations are very important to both countries and world. The US is willing to strengthen communication with China, manage differences and promote cooperation.
The US remains wary of Beijing's increasing closeness with Russia. Comments from Wang yesterday talking up links with Moscow following talks w/Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov likely to have caused consternation in Washington, D.C,.
